Gastrointestinal (GI) Compounding

Digestive symptoms sometimes call for a preparation that is not on a shelf. Sierra prepares GI-related compounds when — and only when — your prescriber requests them.

Individualized GI Preparations, When Prescribed

Gastrointestinal compounding may be considered when a prescriber requests a preparation — for concerns such as reflux, IBS-related symptoms, bloating or motility — that a commercial medication does not meet. Sierra Compounding Pharmacy prepares GI-related compounds only with a valid prescription.

A compounded formulation may be an option when a commercial treatment is not tolerated, or when a specific strength or dosage form is requested. FDA-approved products remain the starting point whenever they meet your needs.

Sierra’s Role: Review and Preparation

Our pharmacists review each formulation and coordinate with the prescriber when details need clarification. Preparations are made in our non-sterile lab in Rancho Cucamonga, following USP 795 and USP 800 standards, with pharmacist oversight throughout.

Request refills before your supply runs low and ask us how much lead time your prescription needs. For a broader look at digestive health, our article Understanding Nutritional Medicine: Gut Health and Inflammation goes deeper on the topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a prescription for a compounded GI preparation?
Yes. GI-related compounds are prepared only with a valid prescription, and your clinician determines whether a compounded preparation fits your care plan.
What GI concerns might a compounded preparation address?
Compounding may be considered when a prescriber requests a preparation — for concerns such as reflux, IBS-related symptoms, bloating or motility — that a commercial medication does not meet. What is appropriate is always your clinician’s decision.
Are compounded GI preparations FDA-approved?
No. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are not automatically safer or more effective than approved products. FDA-approved treatments are the starting point whenever they meet your needs.
